Banned in 1530 and never shown in its own time, Cornelis Everaert’s The Play of the Fluctuating Currency is a shockingly relevant early modern Dutch play presented in a brand new English translation by Charlotte Steenbrugge and Else Streitman. Directed by Dylan Coley.
Poculi Ludique Societas brings this banned play to life on one of the company’s newly built replica pageant wagons. Constructed from the latest research into medieval and early modern performance, the wagons are central to PLS’s performance-based research practice. By recreating the physical conditions in which the play was meant to be staged, the company can explore what a manuscript alone cannot reveal. Acoustics, sightlines, audience proximity, and the relationship between actors and spectators all help us understand how a play like Fluctuating Currency might have been performed and experienced in its own time. Join us to give this play new life!
