Across the Channel: English and French Music of the Hundred Years War
Friday, September 5th – 7:30pm
St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, 383 Huron Street, Toronto
Tickets: Pay What You Wish ($40 Suggested)
About the Concert:
This first concert of the season explores the musical evolution in France and England from the 13th to the 15th century, spanning the tumultuous Hundred Years War (1337–1453). Through sacred and secular compositions, join Montreal’s COMTESSA Medieval Ensemble and Toronto’s own Diapente Renaissance Vocal Quintet as we trace how political strife influenced musical innovation, from the intricate polyphony of the Ars Nova to the emergence of the Contenance Angloise.
Featuring works by Machaut, Dufay, and anonymous masters, the program contrasts French and English styles while revealing surprising exchanges between them. This journey through medieval soundscapes in France and England illuminates how conflict and culture intertwined, and how music transcended borders even in times of division.
This concert is part of the Friends of Music at St. Thomas’s Concert Series & the Apocryphonia Concert Series.
